Urgently need help - Windows Vista deleted!

Desperate for advice please. My sons laptop over heated and turned itself off. When he tried to turn it on the next day it would only work in safe mode so he tried to do a system restore but that failed. Eventually he decided to reset it to it's factory settings but now it has lost Windows Vista! I'm assuming that isn't meant to happen? What should he do now?

i assume he put vista on there himself ? because if he done a factory re-set it would of kept the original op settings. if this is so the only way round it is to re-install vista from the original disk like before.

Your son is aware that a factory restore will result in total data loss?

When you say he's 'lost' Vista, do you just means it won't boot to the Vista splash screen? That does not mean Vista has 'gone', it just means that the machine has failed the POST and will not allow Windows to load.
Under these circumstances I think it more likely that a hardware failure is the issue.
Can he try 'Last Known Good Configuration' from the Advanced Boot Options menu?

The Vista was already on his laptop when he bought it. The warranty ran out a year ago now. He did know he would lose everything on it but it was the last resort and he accepted it. Now when u start the pc it says Windows is loading files, then goes into start up repair. Then it says it cannot repair automatically! He has tried restarting it a few times and one time it told him to reload windows though since then it has (on another attempt) come up with the startup repair screen again which I assume is part of the original windows program? I hope this make sense! Thank you for any help/advice
