Help needed! Moving out and haven't a clue!

Options
Hi All,

I'm posting this on behalf of my best friend who is having to move out of her current home which she shares with her other friend. Said friend took care of all the bills whilst they were living together and we (my best friend and I) haven't got a clue how to go about arranging utilities - comparison websites seem to be focussed on people with existing utilities and not the 'first-time-buyers', if you see what I mean.

Oh, and my husband takes care of all our bills for us - so I'm not clued up either! She's moving into a bedsit (i.e small living/dining/sleeping area plus 1 small shower-room).

Any help/suggestions/recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Sorry in advance because you must get this all the time x

Mrs Dawson x

Fisrt off, your friend will need to check that she has her own supply meter and that she is responsible for paying the electricity (and gas if available).

With bedsits, sometimes the fuel cost is included in the rental (rarely) or more often is a sub-metered supply off the landlord's meter in which case your friend won't have any options.

If she does have her own supply meter, she will need to find out who the existing supplier is and register an account with them.
She can then use the comparison sites even with no prior usage data (they often will extimate based on size of property, occupancy level, etc) or she can just see how much see uses with the existing supplier and then see later if she could save anything.
When she registers with the existing supplier, she might want to enquire from them about what they could offer as the best tariff ... but beware of any early exit fees that may apply if she is thinking of switching.

  • Thank you so much Premier. That's really helpful. Pretty sure she has her own supply and we'll get it sorted when she moves in. So grateful x
