Out of Warrenty laptop issue

Hi,

I have a laptop that is 1 months out of Warrenty. The laptop is very new I have had it just over a year. The screen on the laptop has cracked and ink has spread over the screen. From reading online it seems this particular laptop is prone to breaking just underneath the webcam (this is where mine is broken). I emailed Acer to see if they would replace it for free but they have said since it is out of warrenty i will have to pay. I know this is out of warrenty but i dont expect a laptop screen to break after a year of light use. Do you think i could get them to replace it for free?

have you tried going to the shop you bought it from? surely its not reasonable to expect a screen to last just over a year so there should be a something that can be covered by SOGA

It would be the retailer you have to contact, not Acer (unless you bought it direct from them).

Also you'd need to prove it was not down to misuse or accidental damage ("It happened to people on the internet too" does not count as proof)

(2B)For the purposes of this Act, the quality of goods includes their state and condition and the following (among others) are in appropriate cases aspects of the quality of goods—
(a)fitness for all the purposes for which goods of the kind in question are commonly supplied,
    (b)appearance and finish,
    (c)freedom from minor defects,
    (d)safety, and
    (e)durability.

on the two parts i've highlighted - if its happened to others then there may be a defect in the design which causes this to happen to their products and on durability you'd reasoably expect to be able to use your laptop without the screen cracking for much longer than a year

the problem for you is that as you're past 6 months of purchase you have to prove that there is a fault, the other people are just backup to your argument, you need to show on the laptop exactly what has caused the problem
  • Ok thanks for your replys. I got the laptop through Amazon so i will try them and see what they say. Again thanks for taking the time to reply.

A laptop screen should last well over a year, however the majority of them are broken/cracked by something the user has done, either closing it with something on the keyboard (usually a pen) or closing it with one finger at one side, putting stress on the screen, leading to the crack. Or dropping it etc.

As other posters have said you will probably need to find some evidence of cracking occuring in a similar place on the same model and therefore prove an inherent design fault.defect, otherwise Acer and/or Amazon probably won't be interested.
