Talk to the 'person involved' and tell her she owes you £50.
Tell her to sort it out with the hotel.
You did her a favour... she should fix this problem.

The hotel are right - you accepted the T&C when you booked the room

I hate to say it but it sounds like your friend is a liar.

it is not stated in there t&c that my card will be used to pay for anything other than the room and i wrote in the email confirming my card details that i was not autherising anything else to be taken from my card.

I dont know which hotel you booked with, but most have terms and conditions that make the person booking and paying for the room responsible for any extra charges relating to damages etc I am afraid. By ticking the "I have read the terms and conditions box" when booking you agree to be responsible for these terms and conditions. Although you did not stay there you are the customer not your friend. I know you sent an email to the hotel, but this does not alter the terms and conditions of the booking. It is only in the unlikely event that they emailed back saying they would not hold you responsible for any extra charges that you would not be liable.

For example premier inn terms and conditions say
"You are responsible for any damage caused to the allocated rooms or the furnishings of the hotel. If any act, default or neglect by the guests or organisers results in damage or complaints from other guests, the customer shall be liable to pay to Premier Inn on demand the amount required to make good or remedy such damage"

    It goes on to say
"The customer / you means the organizing body company and organiser responsible for commissioning and payment of the event.

The contract means the agreement between the Premier Inn and the customer for a specific booking or series of bookings".

    http://www.premierinn.com/en/terms.html

If you let us know the hotel, we could look at the terms and conditions on their site to see what it says.

I think your friend has behaved very badly, after you were so nice and did her a big favour. She should pay you the £50 back to you now. It should not be down to you to deal with this matter. If the fire alarm went off in the hotel, then all the guests would have had to vacate the building. I doubt very much a hotel would lie about that, as a fire alarm going off is normally logged and an investigation as to the source of the alarm/fire and is usually carried out. If your friend smoked in the room this may have triggered it.

Slightly OT, but this is a prime example of why people should think twice about giving away free or low cost hotel rooms.
    Gone ... or have I?
