Actionman, no-one has judged anyone on this thread at all! Every single poster has come up with spectacularly neutral comments and some very useful and helpful suggestions. I respectfully suggest that you brush up on your English comprehension skills asap before your lack of them gets you into serious trouble

    A little over the top.

  • Perhaps but I'm one of the 3 mil on JSA right now. Or rather I would be if they were actually paying me which they are not at present but that's a sob-story for another thread entirely

We have something in common then. It does pee me off when a employer declines you on the basis of your CV with limited experience yet you get a interview for something better (higher wage, better role).

Bitter and twisted matches my state at the moment.

Oh and throw in the other 100 000 unemployed graduates in the mixture too.

God knows how the 40% of kids who failed getting 5 C's or above GCSE are getting on with the job hunt

  • It also pees me off no end when I get an interview for something I'm evidently capable of doing at a salary lower than I was previously earning but they see me as over bloody-well qualified for it and possibly not biddable enough either!

I'm not bitter and I'm not twisted either (yet). My user-name is a private joke because in real-life I'm the complete opposite but there's plenty of time. ;)

Dave Foody, you didn't say how old you are, but if you are getting on for 60 or so you might manage to get a roll-up mortgage where the interest is rolled up until you die. Such a mortgage would be for a very low percentage of the property value.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Not sure who you are thinking is judging, but at least two people who posted apart from the OP are on JSA at present! ;)

at least 3 million are. More so the young with limited experience/only have a mere degree...

If all three million had posted on this thread they'd have crashed the server!!

I had to ask a very similar question in a level 4/5 exam last June as we are taught in metric; I can assure you I am bl**dy good at my job. I went on to get 85% overall mark despite sitting the exam whilst signed off sick. :D Now waiting for the comments about how easy exams are compared to twenty years ago ....

  • I dunno how easy the exams are because I haven't sat one myself for thirty-odd years but I am reliably informed that the overwhelming majority of applicants for certain entry-level jobs by young peeps who have got what appears to be decent grades in GCSEs when set a simple questionnaire of pretty basic general knowledge questions, which I personally would have expected an 11 year-old to be able to answer correctly, cannot. Like "what is the capital city of France", for instance. I suspect if these candidates hadn't tried to enter the world of work they would most probably have gone for a degree in macrame or Media Studies.

I dont know why you should be judged for being unemployed.

Er.. could it possibly be because if you're unemployed you wont have the income to support the mortgage repayments? I'd say the lenders have every right to judge you as unfit for lending if you dont have the means to repay the loan. Dont you?

Also, theres lots of jobs out there. They might not be very good jobs but people would just rather claim benefits and sit on their behinds than actually do the work.

Degree or not, the taxpayers dont owe you a living.

asking how many inches are in a foot, is not a stupid question because children learn in metric these days. i cant stand it when people say, oh they have a degree but they dont know anything. a degree is a level of education in a particular area, it doesnt mean that the person is a general knowledge expert

anyway, back to the topic, i think the op should look to buy a two bed place with the inheritance, renting out a room from time to time to build up a maintenance pot, the lowest amount he or she could get seems to be 60k and theres lots of ares in the country that you could get a 2 bed for that.
i wouldnt go for a flat due to the leasehold fees
