Ugh I feel so lost right now
Ok... I started a degree in Oct 2008 but due to health, had problems and asked to repeat the year.
This was granted and I began the year again in Oct 2009. However, I'm now asking to defer my studies with a view to go back at some point, again, due to health issues.
Now... I'm thinking I may not want to go back to this course and the course I would like to do is not run by my uni, so I would have to go to another uni if I chose to do this other course.
My question is... where do I stand with financial support? Would I still be able to get help?
Thanks.

Out of my mind. Back in five minutes.

Normally there is only one year of extra funding so you'd be expected to fund yourself in the first year of any new degree. That's assuming it is a three year course.
You can receive the maintenance loan but no grants so they don't cut off all funding.
However, I believe they can make an allowance for health problems...
Do you have evidence of the problems you had - preferably medical evidence?
If you can provide relevent information from your university to show it was impossible for you to continue, that will help too I think.
I think you need to write and enclose the evidence but hopefully someone else will know for sure.0 -
hi fruitloops,
im in the same situation as you. this year im repeating my second year due to health reasons. i have just been told that from when i was sick i should have notified my LEA and written to them with evidence for Compelling Personal Reasons so i am currently underway doing that and notfied them of my situation so they know to expect my letter in the post. under the lea regs if you provide them with evidence for failing your year due to health reasons they have to count it as cpr so your plus one year does not get used up.
i am then transferring courses and start my new course in sept so i was advised that at the beggining of may write to my lea again explaining that i am withdrawing from my course ( if its done in may then i garunteed my 60 day funding from the lea and therefore do not owe them any money) and that i am transferring course along with my change of circs form so then that is all sorted. if you put evidence in your withdrawing letter that the reason your leaving is due to health ( see you can get someone from uni to support you and put your situation in writting so that you then have supporting evidence) then again it will have to count as a cpr year so effectively you should get full funding.
my best advice though is to go to your students union asap and they will guide you on what to and what you will be entitled to. if you want to transfer to another uni and course get in contact with them asap too, even if you dont start in sept so they can agree a transfer or send you via ucas and so you have your place already for when you feel ready for returning and you dont have wait for answers from your new uni. i have found my new uni very helpfull compared to the one i am at but do get everything done asap so that you dont miss out and you get better far more quickly.
i hope i have explained everything clear enough to understand as i know its a long answer to your question. if you get stuck give me a shout as i have a copy of the regs and good luck with it all xx0
