They are meant to be used with twigs, leaves etc. It seeems pointless to use it for newspaper. We put paper in the wormery and the rest goes in the council's recycling bag. Were you just going to use the shredder for paper. My daughter ruined hers by putting branches in that were too thick. There should be a leaflet with it that suggests the best things to shred.

Yep pointless, if you can't recycle it, put it in chicken house, hamster/bunny house, compost heap (you don't need to shred it, just crumple it in single sheets). use it as fire lighters/ give it to someone else who might find it useful.....
    I don't believe you :D

  • The reason for asking is that I use it for my horses bedding and at 17.2HH cross Shire she gets through shredded bedding quickly in winter when she's stabled more - I could use a shredder for the garden anyway and thought that at over four quid a bag to buy I could get some more use out of our old newspapers and put them through the shredder - this is why I wanted to know how big the shreds end up - thanks!

Well I'd go to an outlet that sells different types of shredders ( not diy sheds ) and ask them.

Make sure you by the right type of shredder to cut if you don't, some cut differently IIRC.

I've no idea if newspaper is correct for horses bedding.

  • Papers great for horse bedding - low dust therefore reducing COPD, absorbent, easy to muck out and placed on top of rubber matting, very clean and confortable, but obviously the need for a fairly good sized bed uses a couple of bags of paper (£8 and I'm trying to save money here) a throw - my only forseeable problem is that the size of the shreds will be too small, so I was just enquiring if anyone has put newspaper through a shredder at some point, would it harm the shredder over time and are the shreds around one inch square?

I bought an electric shredder only lasted 4 hours use after putting cabbage stalks through it , Well the Home user is looking for the same use as you , What is wanted is a machine capable of dealing with all materials but nothing I am looking at meets the bill of requirements , Also is it possible to hire a petrol driven machine of this type from a hire shop ?
