I can honestly say that the name your own price does work. I picked an area of London and put in £70 per night for a double ( in this case disabled ) room.
I got the Hilton, Canary Wharf. You may not always get that but if that is a standard, it is fine for the money.
I checked the Hostelbooker to day. For Spain. You can get the same hotel for the same money or less on Priceline UK. The hostel prices shown are per person, so it looks cheap until you see that. I checked Burgos and it came up with 3 hotels, two of which I have seen in Priceline already so hostels are not always cheaper.
Another way is to check the tourist info website of the place you are going.
