problems with my medion laptop help

I have had my medion laptop for sometime now,ok not the best laptops around but lets say it was very cheap to me when purchased from new, anyway after a few months of not taking out of box i noticed there was an error screen when it was started up.
I took it to a computer shop, never had it fixed but was told the battery that keeps the date and time was needing replaced, strange as this normally happens after some years of use of a computer if it happens.

Anyway i have lived with it and if i dont have it plugged into mains all the time i have to enter current date, time and year etc,but as said if plugged into mains it keep this going.

I have since not long after using my computer i got a new battery as the other would not keep a charge and would only work through the mains,so this is maybe a year old now the new battery, cant remember.

To save me most times putting in time, date, year at the start up of my laptop i have sometimes kept this plugged into mains.

But recently i have been getting a new problem, the computer just switches off without any warning, somtimes more often than other times, what could cause this.
I am thinking its not the battery cause the mains would keep this going, could it be the mains not now charging the battery and is starting to fail? or could it be my harddrive or something inside is about to pack in?

I dont wanna end up one day try and start up my computer and its not working as there ae a few things i wanna keep,if i need to get a new laptop then fine, but maybe this is something little or can it be more.

Any ideas?

well 2 be honest it could be a host of things. battery charger failing, dust and gunk in the cpu heatsink and fan you tried cleaning it out as could be overheating, could be harddrive on the way out and quite a few other things.

i would start cleaning out the cpu fan and heat sink and get off what ever you need now onto cd or dvds or usb stick now. not having a go here but is the most common thing i hear on this site 'my computers dieing but i need stuff off it' my advice people should always back up important stuff like photos and docs etc
  • As Basil said, it could be a host of problems. A friend of mine has a laptop that switches off usually between 30 mins - 1 hour after switching on. The cause is overheating. check the underside of the laptop after 30 mins or so and if its really hot, save your work and let it cool down.

If your laptop is on its way out, you can still take out the hard drive and move it to another laptop, or you can usually buy a case for the hard drive that will enable you to connect it to another pc so you can move any files to a new location

Depends on where you bought it and how long "some time" is. All Medion Stuff sold at Aldi has a three-year warranty nowadays, and so might yours have done?.
