Phone and Internet

I don't know if this is the right forum, so please move if somewhere more appropriate.

I have 4 phone sockets around the house, and a couple of years ago bought a set of 4 phones - which actually all didn't need a phone socket, but would work if just plugged into the electric.

Anyway, one by one these phones have become such a problem, that I have had to unplug them.... now having just one old 'traditional' phone plugged into the phone socket/internet socket.

We are really struggling with this as it means to use the phone you have to be sitting by the PC - which does not please the kids if they are wanting to use the PC.
Also, it is hard to hear that phone ring if we are upstairs etc.

If I move this one 'working' phone to any other phone socket in the house, it disconnects the internet, and the xbox live, so again this is not an option.

The main problems I had with the set of 4 phones was
1)Constant beeping - especially the one by my bed...... so that had to be unplugged.
2)Phone just not working.
Of course by the time the problems started, they were out of guarentee.

Can anyone recommend a set of at least 3 phones which can
1) either plug into a phone socket, or work off the electric
2) Will not interfere with the internet
3) Does not cost the earth
4) I do not need an answer machine facility as I have that with my phone provider

I don't know if it makes any difference as to why I am having such problems, but I am with Talk Talk for phone and Broadband.

Many many thanks for any advice, I just spent half an hour being completely bamboozled in Tescos trying to find a replacement as the inconvenience of the current set up means I have to get some replacements asap.

All DECT phones have to have one base unit plugged into a phone socket (master or extension). The others will then connect wirelessly to the base unit once they are paired. And each handset needs to be plugged into a mains socket-you can't power them off the telephone connection alone.
If using the phone causes internet problems, then it sounds like you have bad ADSL filters. Have you tried switching filters to test that? Each active extension needs a filter, that includes Sky boxes.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Sounds like filters problem. Ideally reconnect your phone wiring so that your PC is plugged into the master socket (linebox) and all your extension wiring is filtered through one filter at the master socket.

i.e.plugged into an ADSL filter, which is why it only works at this location.

Presumably not plugged into an ADSL filter? Which is why the phone causes problems.

As macman says, ADSL filters act upon all devices plugged into your phone line other than your ADSL modem/modem-router - it's the normal BT connection side of a filter that is filtered, not the RJ11 side.
