What can I do with the Hijackthis to speed up a laptop

Hi

I am updating a friends laptop for her, she does not have broadband usually, so is finding it hard to load AVG so taken than off and added Avira, however it is only a Celeron with 30gb hd, and appears to me so slow I am wondering if there is anything I can take off to help it speed up.

It would run faster on Ubuntu than Windows but of course that is not to everyone's taste (it isn't to mine tbh so I just bite the bullet and buy hardware that can run the Redmond bloatware reasonably).

This is a laptop of a pensioner, and is adequate for her needs of email and occasional browsing, all I wish to ensure it is a good as it can be. She would not handle other than Windows, and yes it is on XP.

First thing you need to do is run Windows Updates, it is still running XP SP2, SP3 has been around for a couple of years now, set it to receive Auto Updates.
How much RAM is installed? -a RAM upgrade probably the best and most economic way of speeding everything up.

The windows updates have been run by me already, it is set to auto, but this is sometimes not easy on limited use dial-up. XP cannot go above IE7, so have added Chrome as it is reported to be limited resource using. It has 2gb RAM which is adequate for her usage, it is just the length of time from clicking to responding, maybe it is just me being used to a faster processor.

All I wish to do now is to clear off anything unnecessary to clean it up.

I suggest you need to run Updates again, as it should be on SP3, if it's very out of date it often needs more than one run to update fully.
Have you run defrag and disk clean up? Also try CCleaner.
Also how much free disk space? You need about 15% free space to run smoothly, so with only 30GB hard drive that may be getting too full.
With 2GB of RAM that cannot be the problem.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thanks - seems I had downloaded XP SP3 but the time was not set for installation until later. Now installing.

The HDD is not too bad considering its small size 18.1 gb free.

CCleaner only found 18 low risk problems, now gone.

So plenty of RAM, plenty of disk space. Complete the SP3 install, run defrag and disk clean up and see how it goes.
    What browser are you using?

She had IE on can only update to 7 with XP, I had added Google Chrome, but it is the click and wait that is so strange, even something as simple as the start button?

    It's still loading SP3.
