computer goes to sleep

hi my emachine has started to seem to go to sleep the screen just turns black and you can do nothing with it ,you just have to turn it of at the plug and wait about 1 min and restart it and it just starts up as if nothing has happened any ideas ,i am running xp with sp2

    Have you checked the various settings in Control Panel, Power Options?

    if it is just randomly turning itself off it may be a overheating problem, there are programs you can download to check the cpu temperature or some bios systems tell you also
