Readings and hymns

Hi, I'm trying to decide on readings and hymns at the moment too. I don't know why, perhaps someone does, but on the Information leaflet that we received from the vicar at our church he specifically mentions "All Things Bright and Beautiful" and says..."it is not the best of hymns to have at a wedding, it is far too long and the wording not really appropriate for a marriage". Maybe its the verses that I don't remember the words of, not sure, but might be worth checking up.
As its a second marriage for both of us I found the following reading which my daughter is going to read for us, particularly appropriate...would be just as nice for a first marriage too!
Maybe...
Maybe we are supposed to meet the wrong people before we meet the right one so when they finally arrive we are truly grateful for the gift we have been given.
Maybe its true that we don't know what we have lost until we lose it but it is also true that we don't know what we're missing until it arrives.
Maybe the happiest of people don't have the best of everything, but make the best of everything that comes their way.
Maybe the best kind of love is the kind where you sit on the sofa together, not saying a word, and walk away feeling like it was the best conversation you ever had.
Maybe once in a lifetime you find someone who not only touches your heart but also your soul, someone who loves you for who you are and not what you could be.
Maybe the art of true love is not about finding the perfect person, but about seeing an imperfect person perfectly.
For our religous reading we will probably have this...
1 JOHN - CHAPTER 4
7. Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.
8. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
9. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.
10. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins
11. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
12. No-one has ever seen God; but if we love on another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.
As for hymns, then definitely "Love Divine" and now going to check out some of the other suggestions on this thread.
We are also thinking of asking my niece to read the following from a poem by A.A. Milne...its just so sweet but the prose might be a little complicated for her, still undecided..
Us Two
Wherever I am, there's always Pooh,
There's always Pooh and Me.
Whatever I do, he wants to do,
"Where are you going today?" says Pooh:
"Well, that's very odd 'cos I was too.
Let's go together," says Pooh, says he.
"Let's go together," says Pooh.
"What's twice eleven?" I said to Pooh.
("Twice what?" said Pooh to Me.)
"I think it ought to be twenty-two."
"Just what I think myself," said Pooh.
"It wasn't an easy sum to do,
But that's what it is," said Pooh, said he.
"That's what it is," said Pooh.
"Let's look for dragons," I said to Pooh.
"Yes, let's," said Pooh to Me.
We crossed the river and found a few-
"Yes, those are dragons all right," said Pooh.
"As soon as I saw their beaks I knew.
That's what they are," said Pooh, said he.
"That's what they are," said Pooh.
"Let's frighten the dragons," I said to Pooh.
"That's right," said Pooh to Me.
"I'm not afraid," I said to Pooh,
And I held his paw and I shouted "Shoo!
Silly old dragons!"- and off they flew.
"I wasn't afraid," said Pooh, said he,
"I'm never afraid with you."
So wherever I am, there's always Pooh,
There's always Pooh and Me.
"What would I do?" I said to Pooh,
"If it wasn't for you," and Pooh said: "True,
It isn't much fun for One, but Two,
Can stick together, says Pooh, says he.
"That's how it is," says Pooh.0 -
Me and the missus chose this for our 2nd reading. We got our mate to read it. It got some laughs but everyone loved it. Do more searches for Edward Monkton for other great readings/stories. I changed the colours at the time so the reader could distinguish between male and female easily when reading.A Lovely Love Story by Edward Monkton
The fierce ‘Dinosaur’ was trapped inside his cage of ice. Although it was cold he was happy in there. It was, after all, his cage.
Then along came the ‘Lovely Other Dinosaur’. The Lovely Other Dinosaur melted the Dinosaur’s cage with kind words and loving thoughts.
I like this Dinosaur, thought the Lovely Other Dinosaur. Although he is fierce he is also tender and he is funny. He is also quite clever, though I will not tell him this for now.
I like this Lovely Other Dinosaur, thought the Dinosaur. She is beautiful, she is different and she smells so nice. She is also a free spirit, which is a quality I much admire in a dinosaur.
But he can be so distant and so peculiar at times, thought the Lovely Other Dinosaur. He is also overly fond of things. Are all Dinosaurs so overly fond of things?
But her mind skips from here to there so quickly, thought the Dinosaur. She is also uncommonly keen on shopping. Are all Lovely Other Dinosaurs so uncommonly keen on shopping?
I will forgive his peculiarity and his concern for things, thought the Lovely Other Dinosaur. For they are part of what makes him a richly charactered individual.
I will forgive her skipping mind and her fondness for shopping, thought the Dinosaur. For she fills our life with beautiful thoughts and wonderful surprises. Besides, I am not unkeen on shopping either.
Now the Dinosaur and the Lovely Other Dinosaur are old.
Together they stand on the hill telling each other stories and feeling the warmth of the sun on their backs.
And that, my friends, is how it is with love.
Let us all be ‘Dinosaurs’ and ‘Lovely Other Dinosaurs together’. For the sun is warm, and the world is a beautiful place.

Hi All,
Im new here - im looking at possibly a church wedding. What are the rules? 2 hymns and 2 readings? Can anyone do the readings?

Hi and Welcome
On the form we have to return to the vicar there is space for 3 hymns and 2 readings and also a Psalm. From what I understand at least one of the readings should be religous. We are having family members for 2 of the readings (I think it can really be anybody...friends or family) and will probably ask the vicar to read the religous one.
I don't think there is a problem with modern music. We are hiring the organist but the plan is for my son to play me in with Pachabels Canon in D on the acoustic guitar (he has promised faithfully not to break into the "Rock" version! :rotfl:) but we are having the organist play during the signing of the registers and for when we leave the church.
When you meet with your vicar he/she will point you in the right direction and help you with suggestions for the service.
And...I love the dinosaur story, Pimpslider, I haven't heard that before, thanks for suggesting it.0 -

Wow thanks everyone for your help
Lots of good suggestions...
Think we've chosen John 4:7-12 and as a non religious 1, Paths and Journeys:We are all on our own paths, all on our own journeys.
Sometimes the paths cross, and people arrive at the crossing points at the same time and meet each other. There are greetings, pleasantries are exchanged, and then they move on. But then once in a while the pleasantries become more, friendship grows, deeper links are made, hands are joined and love flies. The friendship has turned into love. Paths are joined, one path with two people walking it, both going in the same direction, and sharing each other's journeys. Today N and N are joining their paths. They will now skip together in harmony and love, sharing joys and sorrows, hopes and fears, strengthening and upholding each other as they walk along side by side. At home by the fire, whenever I look up, there you will be. And whenever you look up, there I shall be.
But worried it may be a bit long??
And for hymns we're thinking of All things bright and beautiful, and either 1 more step along the world i go, or amazing grace!
Anyway, thanks for your help guys:money:Trying to get debt-free:money:0
