Which Brand Of Washing Machine

Options
I need to buy a new washing machine as my 5 year old Hotpoint is uneconomical to repair. I thought Hotpoint are a good make - but mine was made on a Friday afternoon when employees just weren't interested :0

I have a few options.
A Candy or a Hoover same price (£240) same spec, 1 year warrenty.
Or Borch £360 with a two year warrenty.
Or Panasonic Washing Machine with a 5 year warranty at £440.

Money is tight, but is it better to spend the cash on a washing macine with a long parts and labour warranty? What brand would you swear by?

I have a baby and I use cloth nappies, so it will get used a lot on a 40degree wash. Any advice welcome cos I just don't know what to do.

Of the ones you mention, I'd opt for the Bosch every time.

That said, my Mum's Candy WM is about 15 years old (possibly more...I think she's only owned 2 washing machines since she was married nearly 40 years ago - the Candy one she has now and a Zanussi).

I have a Zanussi myself but if money were no object, I'd have a Miele.
  • I'd go for the Bosch - my last machine was a Bosch and lasted more than 10 years when my kids were small so it was getting hard use. I hate the Indesit I have now - needed a repair within 3 months of buying it as did the Indesit dishwasher I bought a couple of years ago too.

Agree with you Lobell about the Miele, but sadly too expensive for my pocket. My mum also had a Candy that lasted her a decade, but are they still as good today? As for the Indesit, are they not just Hotpoints?

The sales man did say Bosch were his best brand, so another thumbs up for bosch.
  • Unfortunately Bosch arent the brand they used to be, alot of their machines are now made in Spain instead of Germany. Some of their stuff is still very good but some is no better than the other mid market manufacturers. I paid a bit more recently and bought an AEG machine with 5yr parts and labour included. They have a solid reputation.

Bosch by a mile - virtually anything they make is indestructible. :)

I'm on my second Candy machine. The first one never broke down, but I had to leave it behind when I moved house (from England to NI, and nowhere to store it while my new house was being finished). I had that machine for about 10 years and it never let me down.

The one I have is just as good, it has been going for about five years without a hitch.

I only chose Candy in the first place because of the price tag - I couldn't afford anything else, but in the long run both purchases have been very satisfactory.

However if money were no object I think I'd be looking for a machine with a bigger drum so that I could do a really big wash all at once, rather than having to do two smaller washes, therefore running the machine less often.

Maybe your deciding factor could be something along the lines of duration of cycle, noisiness, or power consumption, and the warranty you mention so that you have peace of mind. All the makes you mention are reputable - it's hard to make a definitive recommendation as not everyone has experience of all the makes and models on the market.

Now I'm off to touch wood so that my machine doesn't break down.
  • I have a bosch and never a problem, but our last one was a Hotpoint, never ever had a problem with it. Add to that the 5 year warranty, i think thats a great deal. Reliability wise, i dont think theres too much difference with hotpoint and bosch

  • Of the three you list I would go for Bosch too. I have an AEG that is 10 years old and other than a new motor paid for by insurance has been very reliable but I have a Bosch dishwasher that is regularly used and hasn't let us down. That is at least 10 years old too.
  • We had a Bosch that gave up the ghost last year. It lasted five years so I feel it did ok as it was not dear at the time. My brother works in an electric shop and he got us a good deal on a Candy, I have to say I really love it. It is only about 8 months old at the moment, but so far it is excellent. The cycles are great on it too, much better than our previous Bosch. However it was a poverty model and the new one is a bit snazzier.

I have a never ending washing basket so here's hoping the Cand sticks it out.

Ive got an AEG now. Which gave the first place to Miele and the second place to AEG which is about half the price.
