I on the other hand found 1and1 to be complete and utter nightmare.

I originally had many Domain names hosted with them ... then one day they offered to give me a free trial for about 3 months of their host package, after 2 months I didn't think much of the hosting for what they planned to charge and from then on the nightmare began ... they'd some how managed to tie up my previous domain names to the hosting in such a way that once I cancelled the hosting it messed up the domains and they'd constantly renew and bill me for domain names I no longer wanted or needed anymore

This went on for about 2 years - was a complete nightmare... constantly getting bills for domain names you didn't want renewed.

The best webhosting company I've ever used is csnewmedia.co.uk if you mention Nick, they may also give you a discount because im a loyal servant to them! They are based in the UK and very reliable i have used them over and over again.

Bit old fashioned but would always register the domain with one company and the hosting with another. If you have problems with one side or the other then there is only half of the stuff to move and I remember too much the old days when hosts "gave" free/ low cost domains and then charged a £100+ "release fee" if you decided to move.

If you are looking at a business site you really need to decide how critical the website is going to be to the business. There are some webhosts out there that are very cheap but they achieve this because every server has 3,000+ sites hosted on them and if any one of them goes wrong it can take down the other 2,999+ sites as well. This can be fine for a personal site (my old one used to go down every Friday at 2pm because one of the other users had set up a massive database task on a schedule that killed the server) but not going to be good for a business.

If it is none transactional and only a small marketing thing then a sold shared hosting will be fine. If your intending this to be a significant revenue stream then you may want to look at a virtual server so you are predominately protected from the actions of others that are sharing the same hardware as you.

http://www.csnewmedia.co.uk are a small company but Carl, one of the owners, is always exceptionally helpful and professional. Not the cheapest but reasonable and good service

I used to use 1and1, but have now changed to http://www.123connect.co.uk/ they are a fraction of the price, and they are based in the UK. So they are far better for google rankings for .co.uk sites (1and1's servers are in Germany). The best bit is that because they are quite a small company, much of the time you actually speak to owner (Jeff) when you call, rather than someone in a call centre. With 1and1's customer service, I think the call centre was in the USA. And although they were quite good, it still sometimes too a few calls to sort problems out.

By the way, you can register the domain through them also.
