Canon Powershot A20 help - please?

My OH bought this oldie A20 on Ebay a while ago - we've been able to view the photos on Vista in Picasa after a deal of trouble - but since formatting both desktop and laptop I can't remember what I did to get them downloaded, to the PC or lappy. I'm ripping my hair out trying to I figure out what to do. Anyone got any clues?
