Many people want to have their number delisted for various reasons but did you know there are more options than just Ex Directory? I thought I'd post a quick guide to the options available. This applies to BT lines or lines provided by telecoms providers using the BT wholesale line.

There are four different Directory Entry types available...

Ordinary Directory Entry (O)
Having an Ordinary Directory Entry means that a subscribers number is listed in the central Openreach database. The entry is then published in the following ways:
  • In the phonebook
  • Online
  • Via 118 services
  • On the Phonedisk CD

Directory Enquiries only (DQR)
Having a Directory Enquiries only entry means that the subscribers number is listed in the central Openreach database. The entry is then published only to 118 directory enquiry services. This is quite good as it prevents cold callers trawling the phone book for numbers or using the data of of the Phonedisk CD but still means friends and family can look you up if they are willing to use a 118 directory service.

Ex-Directory (No Calls Offered) (XDNC)
Ex-Directory means that your number is listed in the central Openreach database and although 118 operators can see the entry in the database, they are not allowed to give out details to callers. However, they can advise callers that the entry exists and that the details are not available. Your number is not published in any directory.

No Directory Entry (NQR)
No entry exists in the central database. This should be used for lines where you don't want any incoming calls or if you want to be completely sure that nobody can even find out that you have a phone line at your address.

Hope the info is useful.
