This winter is going on and on and on. We had down to minus 20 at one point and the soil is still frozen hard. I think my lavender is gone - the stems are all broken at the bottom and just come away when you touch them. My rosemary is looking pretty dire as well, and the straws are def lifeless, their tubs are rock solid frozen lumps. I just want it to thaw out !

It's really difficult to tell tbh. I opened the curtains to yet another blanket of snow this morning, even my hardy brassicas are dying off now.
But some things seem to be struggling on, it's just a question of waiting, doing what you can to keep them warmer and seeing what comes up again.

  • Scratch a small bit of the bark with your nail, if its green underneath then its ok, if its brown then start to make plans to replace it. Don't do so until May where you are, it should have made some shoots by then if there's any life in it.

I'm the same, I hate this cold horribleness :o
But I think your lavender and Rosemary will be ok, mine in the front garden look very sad but they'll fight back, they alway do. They're hardier than us ;)

I alway say every year that when it's autumn I'll chop 'em right back to protect them but I never do and they always carry on regardless.

Looks like my Agave Americana is a goner :mad:

Had a look around yesterday (before the snow) and, despite being pulled right up to the house, a lot of the leaves in the rosette have gone soft and floppy.

I think my strawb's have had it (but then the planter they were in is looking worse for frost as well), and I'm wondering if the purple sprouting can rise from the dead a third time - it looks pretty sick but there are a few new buds on it, so maybe!

I guess the downside to gardening is that sometimes nature works against us instead of helping us grow nice things.

  • anything youve got in tubs, get them indoors m8.
  • I've lost quite a few pots this winter - cracked and then fallen in bits when the soil inside froze and expanded time and time over. I really am getting thoroughly fed up of winter now. The sight of lambs in the fields this week cheered me up, reminding me that that maybe Spring isn't far away! Then this morning I looked out on yet more snow! Bah!
