Tyres....

Just been checking the tread depth on all my tires as part of my routine - noticed something a bit odd that I've overlooked before.

All 4 tyres are marked 205/55/R16 91V - 3 of them are Continental and one of them is Pirelli

The Pirelli tyre looks wider than the rest - it sticks out from the wheel by about 5-10mm - at both sides.

Is this normal? Surely if they're all the same width/profile they should fit the wheel in the same way?

As long as the tyre's dimensions are the same on each wheel, and the wheels are all the same size, then it sounds like the Pirelli just has extra rim protection. This helps prevent scuffs and scratches when you bump into kerbs, etc.

The width of the tyre is measured on the outside edge, ie the bit that is in contact with the road, not at the point that it meets the wheel.

This is why a variety of tyres of different widths can fit on the same wheel.

What are you talking about? All you have done is quote a part of the original posting.

    Why would you do this?
