VLC - Media Player - Nothing Works!

I want to throw this laptop out of the window - help!
I've tried everything, first downloading codecs to try and run windows media player - didn't work.
Now I've down loaded VLC which seems highly rated and laptopstill won't play discs. I have a 10 year old son that seems to think I'm hopeless because I can't get it to work. He's coming home in the morning and I'm desparate to sort this out.
Any help would be appreciated?
Thanks
Terri

Very very dumb question time - you have checked that you have a DVD drive in the laptop, and not just a simple CD drive? (My old Dell laptop only has a CD drive!):heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

Will it play audio cd's? I am beginning to think there may be a problem with the drive itself. Do you have a lens cleaner? It may be worth a try.Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!0

Without the information of what you are trying to play, no-one can help you. I wasn't asking what the brand or type of physical disc was.
Do you use itunes? When did this problem start? Has it ever worked?!!

Thanks everyone - it's working! Terrysdelight is a blonde and I didn't select the type of media. Tried an audio cd, selected audio - it worked. Retried family guy, selected DVD and it worked. Relief. Thanks everyone.0
