I need to buy a car - help please?

Hi there,

I am looking to buy a car in the next few weeks and need some help! I've recently been made redundant and so have to hand back my company car. Having been out of the car market for a while, I'm a bit overwhelmed in the choice out there, and hoping you guys could make some recommendations. My shopping list is as follows:

Budget - £6.5k
5 Doors
Pref. diesel
Pref. automatic
Pref. leather upholstery
3-4 years old max
Medium sized (have a dog to transport and hopefully a baby soon

I know this is a bit of a list, and so I am flexible. Just hoping somene can give me a starting point?

I would suggest a second hand Nissan Qashqai would suit your needs but I'm not sure they've been around for long enough to fit your price range unless you find something with an exceptionally high mileage.

3 year old Mitsubishi Colt. Ok, no leather but it would only burn you in the summer and freeze you in winter.

Only thing outside your requirements is it is 5 years old. And I know nothing about whether the VW auto boxes are any good or not.

I say leather seats as its easier to clean up after the dog. But I would forego the leather if I could get a car that's got a half decent boot to contain him. That Colt is looking interesting.

Sorry, should say I'd rather not have an estate. They've never really appealed to me But granted it would be good for the dog.

Vauxhall Astra
Honda Jazz - the dog might enjoy the flex seating system, the rear seats fold upwards. It's not diesel but is very fuel efficient

I would second the Octavia (hatch if you dont want estate) but think you will need to drop the leather to get one in your budget with less than 100k on the clock. I would also say previous model Superb but its a saloon so no good for the dog.

Also would have a look at Volvo as their autos seem to be fairly bulletproof.

Your wishlist (combined with reliability) and the price you want to pay rule out so much of the market.
