Wanting to pull out but unsure if contracts have been exchanged yet?

My husband has just heard about some changes that are happening at work which may affect his job. For this reason we don't want to continue with our house purchase and sale but are unsure whether the contracts have been exchanged yet? Do the solicitors tell you just before they are about to exchange?
We have signed the contracts but a firm completion date has not yet been given. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

We were not told until after. Sounds like you need to get on the phone first thing Monday morning.Been away for a while.0

Just because you have signed contracts doesn't mean you have exchanged. Sometimes the contract can be signed a long way ahead of the actaul exchange.
Only your solicitor can tell you if you have, or have not, exchanged but believe me if you have I would really of thought you would have been told by solicitor and EA and would now know for sure.0 -
Its quite normal to sign the contracts in advance - I have always signed mine at the start of the conveyancing but not dated them. Your solicitor should have told you an exchange and completion date. I would be surprised if you have exchanged and you are not aware of it.0

Our solicitor phoned us for a final OK on the day of exchange. We were led to believe that this was normal practice and that everyone up and down the chain was doing the same.
I find it hard to believe that your solicitor would not tell you when the exchange was planned to take place and let you know what was about to happen or had happened.0 -
Our solicitor phoned me just before she was about to exchange on our purchase just to check that we had not changed our minds about buying our property. I am sure that yours will do the same - however, I would phone as soon as you can to let him/her know the situation so that she can get onto your buyers solicitor - it will affect the whole chain if you are pulling out.0

Well batgirly have you exchanged yet?0

I almost always phone my clients just before exchange to make sure they haven't (a) chanaged their mind or (b) died - both of these have happened to me unfortunatly!
There are unusual circumstances when I won't need to, but you don't sound like you'd fall into one of them, so get on the phone!0 -
Can we have an update please?
