Windows 7 / Vista Backup

I have 2 laptops, 1 runs Windows 7 and 1 runs Vista. I would like to use the built in Windows backup tool. Should I use a DVD R or a DVD RW? Or does it not make any difference?

A DVD+R can record data only once and then the data becomes permanent on the disc. The disc can not be recorded onto a second time.

The data on a DVD+RW disc can be erased and recorded over numerous times without damaging the medium.
  • So if I use the RW, when I run the backup in the future, I will not need to use new discs I presume.

Yep, just do a quick format and re-use. Check the [ is readable in your DVD player ] disk works in DOS just in case

You would be better advised to use an external hard disk drive for you backups.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

In theory, yes, but I consistently see +RW, -RW et al. succumbing to read/write failures when attempting to rerecord data etc. I barely even bother with DVD mixed data formats nowadays for that very reason. Just drives me mad Lol.

hhmmm while we are here and on the same subject would peoples opinons got 2 lappys both running win7 ulimate 64 bit versions now have taken 2 backups of 'system repair disc' from same lappy.

now the question is this as lappys identical in spec os etc is the disc interchangeable of the 2 lappys or do i need to do the same eg burn from the other lappy for that lappy?

i would like to think the disc is for the version rather than the computer or am i on the wrong end of the stick here on this occasion!

Wow! take my breath away Lol. If absolutely identical then the backup should work; but it's really no skin off your nose to make two separate and individual backups....yes?
