M50 Eastbound meeting M5 Northbound

Yesterday I travelled along the M50 Eastbound for the first time through Hereford and Worcester. I was going to the North West. Where the M50 meets the A38, all traffic heading for the M5 North was forced off on what felt like a lengthy diversion up the A38, meeting the M5 further North.

There were official yellow diversion signs all along the route. When I got home (very late) I looked on the Highways Agency website, and there are no planned roadworks, just some that finished mid January.

Does anyone live in that area or travel this road regularly ? I wasted a lot of time on this diversion and am thinking that I ended up following signs that should have been taken down over a month ago. I've got to do the same trip next Friday so any local knowledge would be appreciated.

Thanks

There were some M5 problems yesterday (accidents) - from memory in the area you wanted to go through

Having said that, I'm surprised that that sort of diversion should be signposted.
