Home phone, short contract

Hi all,
I'm returning to the UK and want to get my land line reconnected so I can use it for broadband. I might leave again within 6 months so I don't want an annual contract with BT. Which telephone providers offer monthly contracts with no minimum term?
I don't know yet whether there will be a reconnection charge. I tried the Post Office but they can't find my address and say they can't proceed, I know it sounds dumb, I'm trying to get it resolved but am looking for other providers in case I can't resolve it.
Finding short term broadband will be easy, its the phone that's proving difficult.
Thanks all.

The Post Office is your only option. Find out the full and correct address (incl. the Postcode) and try them again.
http://postcode.royalmail.com/portal/rm/postcodefinder?pageId=pol_login&catId=400145&cs=1Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Thanks. At least I know. To show how dumb they are, I have the correct address, the problem they say is they have no record its divided into flats, flats that have been here for 10 years. BT can install a phone no problem but the Post Office can't.0

Have you considered a 3G modem instead? Ours runs at 2.3Mbps to 2.7Mbps and that's with Three on PAYG - a good bit faster than the ADSL ran at when we had a landline.0

Thanks, I looked into mobile offerings, they're an option but the speed shouldn't compare to landlines yet, my last ADSL in the UK was 24MB with a real time speed of something like 11-15MB.0

IDNet do 30 day phone contracts, excellent and very fair company.

Thanks Inactive, that's a great find. Someone recommended Vivaciti.net to me too, I've mailed them, they don't seem to have any download restrictions either so I'll see what information comes back.0

www.phone.coop do a 3 month contract if you take over an existing working line.
I was not aware that Vivaciti offered a landline service.0 -

Great company, I have been with them for over 3 years now, small company with first class service standards.
Rare in todays market.
30 day contract means you can leave easily if you are not happy, but you will be.0 -
OK well that's exactly the kind of info I needed everyone. Thanks all, Vivaciti were quick off the mark and are going to find out if there's a phone reconnection charge for me, but even if there is they're asking for 80 pounds whereas I think BT charge a lot more. I'll go with Vivaciti if all goes well with IDNet as an equally good alternative.0

I cannot find a landline option at Vivaciti, only VOIP, do you have a link ?0
