Car tyres - where is best/cheapest?

Options
Hi-ya

We hope to re-MOT our car soon as know we need 2 tyres soon. Where is best/cheapest? The car is a VW Polo 2004.

We got a quote from Kwik fit of £46 each for budget tyres or £64.50 each for mid range ones.

We do do quite a bit of motorway driving at the moment so would it be worth going for the more expensive ones do people think?

Kwik Fit also charge £28 for tracking which seems a lot but could be the going rate - please has anyone had this done recently and recall what they paid?

Many thanks

The actual tyre ssize might help a little - but kwik fit are unlikely to be the cheapest.

Try a local tyre & exhaust fitter (non chain) or google cheap tyres, or even search on here. There's a few internet based tyre suppliers who get a local firm to fit.
  • :o Sorry, yes they are "185/60/H14" apparently...!

Bought three Maxxis tyres in november, sise 185 65 15 for £43 each including fitting etc.Been great with the bad weather loads of grip and quiet.Never heard of them before, but after looking around ,and reading a good report in auto express took the plunge.

I've used e-tyres a number of times before, partly for convenience (mobile tyre repair/fitters) and partly because their prices are good. Had great service every time with them.

Cheapest they have on there for what you need is £41.60 inc VAT for economy. Price includes mobile fitting, new valve, electronic balancing & environmental tyre disposal.

    Mid range is £44.20.

For around £60 you're looking at Goodyear, Continental, Dunlop, Pirelli....

just try local tyre dealers and get quotes, avoid kwik fit as you just get ripped off.
    i pay around £50 per tyre fitted and balanced for 195 x 60 x 15 tyres.
just had 2 front toyo proxes cf1 fitted for £100
same price were firestone tz200, both great tyres that wear well, with low road noise. obviously i could have got budget tyres a lot cheaper.

Kwik Fit were the cheapest when replacing a tyre on a Ford C-Max about 6 months ago. They are much cheaper buy buying the tyre and fitting online - it was considerably more expensive to walk in and buy.

I compared them with E-Tyres, Camskill, Black Circles and all the local places to me.

However, I didn't want to use Kwik Fit so got a local tyre fitter to price match them, although most were not prepared to do this.

ps - don't buy budget tyres - tyres are a very important safety feature and not one worth skimping on in my opinion.

Depends what tyre size(tyre profile) you are after really, theres blackcircles where you pay for the tyres(or so i think so) and you pick a day to get them fitted and you go to a chosen fitter of your choice, do you have a local tyre fitter so you help local businesses

try costco (if someone you know is a member), micheldever tyres, etyres, blackcircles, event-tyres, camskill

There isn't any one which is consistently cheapest in my experience.

Just bought 2 michelin energy saver 205/55 vr16 size at costco @ 85.76 each (includes vat) including rotation, fitting and tracking. 91.80 each for the same thing on etyres.

Edit: checked receipt and it says balancing not tracking, sorry.

That quote seems expensive to me. You probably don't need tracking unless the steering wheel is vibrating violently or pulling to one side etc.
Try https://www.valuetyres.co.uk You buy them online and get fitting at a local place all included in the price. Cheapest I can see there are £33 for your size, each, fitted. On a car like that budget tyres are fine. I believe there's also a 10% discount code circulating for that site as well - something to do with the CWU.

You could also go down the part worn tyres route, if you're comfortable with that. They'll be even cheaper...
