MOT queries & VW Polo window wipers?

Options
Hi-ya

Please can anyone remind me how far in advance you are allowed to get your MOT re-done? Think ours runs out in April sometime - is it too soon to book it in now?

The car as a back window wiper but although it wipes, the wash part of it seems to have died - no water will come out. Will this be an MOT failure?

The front window wipers seem to be cleaning okay but make a dreadful grating noise - how do we know if we need to replace them for the MOT and if we do do we have to get VW ones or can we get any sort? It is a 2004 1.4 car.

Sorry for so many questions...ever so grateful for any help.

Many thanks.

One month, i.e. if yours expires on 6th April, the earliest that you can present your car for MOT is 7th March.

No, rear wipers/washers are currently not included.
  • rear wipers are not tested during a MOT. as for the front wipers as long as they clean the screen and are not damaged they will pass. However replacement wiper blades are not expensive so might be worth changing them anyway.

Look at your MOT certificate, the dates are printed on it.

Glad you asked about the rear wash wipe OP as mine doesn't work either and I was wondering...
DON'T go to the dealers OR Halfords for your wiper blades, they'll be expensive. Get a set on ebay or do a google search. They're really easy to fit.

You can take it for the MOT anytime but you will loose out, e.g if its before the 6th of March the MOT will run out exactly a few from that date. MOT after that date it will run out on the 7th of April :)

Rear windscreen washer pipe will probably have popped off either in the engine bay, near the rear passenger footwell (leads to wet footwell), or in the tailgate (water drips from drain channels when attempting to spray). Yet another of those annoying niggling VW faults/features.

I have found the Euro car parts website to be cheap for Bosch wiper blades (cheaper than Halford's trade card prices), plus they offer free delivery.

They're easy to fit. Just make sure you don't let the arm snap back as it may break the windscreen glass. If you want to be ultra careful rest a cloth on the screen the gently rest the arm onto the cloth then it can't happen.
  • As JD82 said, you can MOT your car every day if you want, but putting it in within a month before it expires will get you 12 months + whatevers left on your old MOT certificate.

Anything over a month and you just get 12 months.
  • Hi anewman

Thanks so much your post is very helpful. I'll try to find if the water pipe has slipped off but haven't noticed any water in footwell or in the boot so I'm thinking maybe the spray bit is blocked somehow. But I'll definitely check.

Thanks for the tip re fitting new blades, much appreciated.
