I took a reading on Tuesday @ 9.30am and another on Wednesday @ 9.30am the meter said we had used 32 Units in that 24hr period. In that period we did not use the tumble dryer at all but the electrical oven was on for 1hr and the dishwasher was used for about 2 hrs.

    Does these seem high???

It does seem high, we used average of 55 a day last week in an all electric house with 24/7 electric heating, electric immersion, electric shower and I tend to use oven most days.

Get a monitor and start tracking where your power is going.

That does seem abnormally high. The oven would be rated at just over 2kw and the thermostat would switch it off for a lot of the hour it was on so would only use between 1 and 2 units. The dishwasher would be about the same so a max of 4 units for those 2. So you have got to find out where the other 28kwh are going.
Can you take a reading overnight, ie when you go to bed and when you get up. The usage then should be quite low with only fridge and freezer operating.
What sort of meter have you got? Is there a chance you are misreading it?

why not buy one of those electricity monitors, or you might still be able to get one free from british gas. ill try to find the link.
    Nice to save.

We took another reading today and we have used 23 Units over the last 24hr Period. We did not use the Tumble Dryer, Electric Oven or Dishwasher in this period. The only items we used in this period was the TV (switched on during the day and evening), Toaster used once, Kettle used 6 times, Bottle warmer used once and lighting used in the evening.

I have investigated the power consumption on our TV...we have a Pioneer 50" plasma and in the specs it says it uses 388W when in use. Compared to our previous TV (42" plasma) which only used 170W does seem alot.

How would I work out how many units the TV uses per day to see if the problem lies with that item.

    Many thanks in advance

    Calculate hours of use x 388w i.e 6hrs x 388w = 2328w / 2.33kw
    10hrs x 388w = 3880w/ 3.88kw

Do you leave it on standby and do you know what it uses then?
  • 1KwHr (1,000W per hour) = 1 unit of electicity on the meter.

So, if you TV is on for 10 hours it will use 3880W (or 3.9KwHr) = 3.9 units on the meter. Or 0.39 units per hour.

Using 23 units without using the oven/dishwasher/drier seems a lot, as these items tend to be the ones using the most electricity. Are you sure you dont have an immersion heater on, not all GCH systems provide hot water as well as heating, could be you have a hot water tank that has the immersion switched on 24/7...that would give you a high read.

You can buy a plug in monitor that measures consumption of individual appliances.

    e.g. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9823446.htm

Shop around as you can often pick up a similar version for less than a tenner elsewhere.

We only have a gas condensing Combi boiler for heating and hot water, nothing else..

    thx Mark

I totaly agree...if you take in account the TV usage for the 24hr period (TV on between 9am to 12pm = 15hrs) 5.8 units has been used. Take that TV usage of the total for the 24hr period leaves 17 units.
17 Units used for Lighting in Living Room and Kitchen (25 x 20W LV spot lights) remembering that these are only used in the evening and not all the time in the kitchen. Kettle 6 times in the day, Toaster used once, Bottle warmer used once and Laptop used for about 3 hrs in total.

    That's 500W of lighting! Ouch!

= 0.5Kw/h (or half a unit per hour) just for your lights.
