Hi folks. Recently I had to use AOL phone help to get reconnected to t'inbternet. During the phone help I had to use ethernet cable while the guy talked me through set up and changing some modem router settings, so when my internet connection came back on I thought everything would be fine, but, then when I removed the ethernet cable I lost internet connection. So, how do i go about receiving my t'internet wirelessly again?
Thanx.

First off, my apologies on the length of this
Is the wireless light lit-up on the router itself ?
If no, go step 1 (your wireless needs enabling and possibly setting up)
If yes, go step 2 (wireless probably needs reconnecting or setting up)
Are you using Windows to manage your Wireless Networks, or 3rd party software?
If so, go to step 3 (it's best to let Windows manage it)
STEP1
Connect a network cable to your computer & router, wait for it to pickup a network connection. Click start - run - type cmd then press enter. In the black window that appears type ipconfig /all (there is a space before the /), then press enter.
In the window that appears, look for something which says something like "Ethernet Local Area Connection", it will have an IP address which is normally 192.168.x.x. Make a note of the "Default Gateway" it will be something like 192.168.0.1
Now, open an Internet Browser and in the address bar type in your gateway address with http:// before it (for example... http://192.168.0.1) then press enter. Type in your username & password for your router.
Now that you are in your router, navigate through the menus and look for something which says "Wireless Settings". Now, here are some options you should be choosing for your wireless....(you need to select apply for each) then proceed to the relevant menus
Enable Wireless : Yes
Broadcast SSID : Yes (Make a note of the name, or change it to something)
Security : WPA/WPA2-PSK (no server)
Encryption : TKIP+AES
Channel : Set it to Auto
Networks : Set it to B/G/N for best compatiblity
Now, you need to setup the security key, go the the section for Security. Type in a passphrase you want to use which you will remember (i.e AOLSUCKS) and click apply.
Now if you look at the router, you will see the light should be lit up. Your wireless is enabled in the router and security is effective again. Now that you have done this...... GO TO STEP 2
STEP 2
Since the wireless is already enabled on your router, you most likely just need to setup the security again.
First, turn on your wireless on the computer
- Laptops (Press FN+F7, or sliding a switch at the front / side)
- Desktops (Should already be enabled)
Now, double click the wireless connectivity icon (bottom right) looks like a computer with a radar on it. It should display all the networks that the wireless card can see on your computer....
Go to the bottom left of the window that appears, look "advanced settings" in the window. IIRC it's the very bottom option. When you open this Window, there will be a list of Wireless Networks in the bottom. Click remove to everything in here.
Now you need to do some browsing because I can't remember everything offhand through the 3 tabs and the option called "properties" to the right on the first tab.... look for and enable these options. I believe one is on the "properties" tab and the other two are on "wireless networks" tab.....
- Automatically connect to preferred networks (tick this)
- Access point only (as opposed to any available access point)
- Automatically connect when network is in range (tick this)
Now click OK to apply these options, in your Wireless Networks window, click refresh on the left hand side.... look for your Wireless Connection and double click on it, type in the security key when prompted and click OK. Security Key is what you entered in STEP 1 (i.e AOLSUCKS) or when you first setup the Wireless
When it says connected you wireless should now be working. You can verify this by going start - run - cmd - ipconfig /all and making sure the "wireless" ethernet has an IP address. If it does, then unplug your network cable and your wireless should be working
STEP 3
Windows is the best software to use for managing your Wireless Connections. It's simplistic to navigate and most people understand how to use it. Also 3rd party programs sometimes conflict with each other....
Open your 3rd party software, look for an option which says "Use Windows to manage my wireless connection"
If you can't find this, click start > run > type services.msc and press enter. Navigate to the services option in the left hand pane, scroll down the list on the right and look for "Windows Zero Configuration"
Double click this and click start and set it to automatic. Then click apply
If this still doesn't work, open the Wireless Networks (bottom-right) of the screen and click advanced settings (bottom left) in the Windows that open up on one of the tabs, I think it's the first. There will be an option that says "Let Windows manage my wireless connections". Click apply to this and Windows should be managing your wireless.... now go to STEP 1 or STEP 2 (depending if wireless light lit up)
Additional problems you may get, suggestions to fix.....
Wireless Always Dropping
Interference through other equipment or wireless networks in area. Logon to router and try different channels. Make sure security is enabled too..
There's probably more but that should help, if anyone can think of anything I've missed or can correct please feel free to do so.
