Trip to O2 in Apr Eng Works on Tubes

Oh dear, my dear technophobic OH asked my sister to book my Xmas present of tickets for Dancing on Ice. Only he forgot to mention to her that closest to home would be best (in our case Birmingham) so she booked O2 on Sat 17 Apr for 7.30 pm performance.

I've looked at hotels and found a Premier Inn for £39 in Beckton and other hotels in Londons Docklands for around £50. Was then feeling really pleased to find rail tickets on Trainline for both of us for a total of £40 return. Then my bubble burst on looking at the TFL website to find all the tube routes I checked have planned engineering works that weekend and not being familiar with London or the underground system I'm panicking that this is going to turn into a nightmare!

It might sound daft but are there other tube lines we could use from Docklands or Beckton by walking a short distance or can we hop off one tube and walk to another easily?

Other options are to drive from home to Beckton or Docklands then drive to O2, but where to park reasonably? I've seen threads about the cinema or tube station parking, but what time should we arrive to get a space? Are there any other places we could park within say a half hour walk, eg supermarket, superstore, McDonalds, etc for free/cheap and is it safe to be walking back to car late evening?

Other alternative is Holiday Inn at Greenwich for £76.50 using Obukit's tips :A, but that's really pushing the price of our trip up.

Thanks for your help

When tubes are closed for engineering works there are invariably replacement bus services - so you still get there , just a bit slower.

Stops at Waterloo, Embankment, Blackfriars, London Bridge, Tower Hill, Canary Wharf (best bet from the Docklands), Greenland, Masthouse Terrace, Greenwich, QE2 (The o2) and Woolwich. You can buy your ticket on the boat. Much nicer than the tube any day.

Sat 17th the Jubillee is closed from North Greenwich to Stratford, so if you stay somewhere more central you will be able to get to North Greenwich by tube. We stayed at the Southwark Travelodge, it is 5 stops from North Greenwich and this part of the line is not closed. If you are coming from Birmingham you can get megabus on your dates for £6 return per person. www.megabus.com
  • Thank you to all. I'd got very confused as I'm not at all familiar with the tube. After looking again I discovered that parts of the tube are only down at certain points, so I found a map online and was able to work out which bits weren't affected. I've now booked somewhere and am really looking forward to a nice weekend away now.
