pc wont boot up

Hi, my pc wont boot up, it gets to the blue page with the windows xp logo and wont go any further.
Ive got this message "the application is not a valid windows image, check against your instal disk" (dont think ive got this )
i've tried to boot up in safe mode but only get as far as the blue page.
It was working fine yesterday :mad:
Can anyone advise me please..

Not wanting to sound like a broken record, but do none of the recovery options work (there are several listed).

no, i get the option to start it in all the different modes ie safe mode etc but it still wont get beyond the light blue screen with the windows xp logo.
I dont have the disk to insert for windows but i do have a code from when i bought the pc.
(btw my knowledge of computers is very limited)
