What will she use it for?

How much can you afford/want to spend?

    Canon EOS-1DS

Based on your vague brief of wanting the best camera then it is the above in my opinion... though of cause you also need to buy the lenses, flash etc as well

I suspect that this is probably a bit more of the best than you really ment so details about priorities and an actual budget will help to get more sensible replies - eg is it more important that it can take short videos or that it will fit in a pocket or the amount of zoom it has?

Biggest most important factor for me is shutter lag.

As you can see Canon do well for budget photography. I made a BIG mistake of buying the wrong digi camera for my needs, I also wanted to get some good photos of my kids and the camera I bought didn't allow me to achieve that. This was down to one reason - shutter lag. I ALWAYS missed the actual picture I was trying to capture.

Now I have a Fuji E550 and its quick, really quick. With no flash in good conditions I get the picture I want.

    How about a Casio? http://www.savastore.com/productinfo/product.aspx?catalog_name=Savastore&product_id=10287885&pid=45&tid=3

The Sony are good if you want slim line design (like the T9 or T30) but you are paying for both the badge and miniturisation

If size isnt as important then the classic camera makers like Canon are the best to go for (prehaps not the the 1DS though - if she does want that sort then you can buy that for her, give it to me and I will let you have my 350D in silver for free ;) )
