If you in a business, technically you need to register S/Employed for tax and Ni and possibly VAT.
A lot of people also take out insurance as an indemnity.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
you only need to consider it a business should your turnover exceed a large amount (i'm not certain what)
one piece of advice though when repairing computers, many people believe that any fault that occurs after your repair is a result of a 'shoddy repair', and therfore liable for 'free' repairs every time something goes wrong
there are some right idiots out there, rarely do you come accross a nice person in the computer repair business
IF you decide to go ahead with things, ensure you do NO 'favours', otherwise, every 'small' item after that then should be a 'favour' and therfore unchargeable. the minute you charge for a favour and the next fault occurs, then you're back to square 1, clearly the fault must be related to the original repair 'as it never done that before'
computer repair is a mucky business i'm afraid, and there aint much money to be made either :-(money saving my @rse.
I've spent 10x as much as I would if I had never discovered this website :-)

Basically you will be liable for tax and NI on *any* income at all after taking your expenses into account.

The cowboys always have only a mobile number - If you are genuine place your ad with both a fixed line number AND a proper address.

i second that, i have only ever done computer repair work for friends and family i try to avoid doing work for people other than that as other people are forever calling u back to do things which are often a 5 min job and therefore feel guilty charging them - i used to build pc's to order and offered some sort of after support but after hearing nothing from one lady 4 years later rung me up and tell me her pc had crashed and i should fix it!! Democracy is a process by which the people are free to choose the man who will get the blame.:j0 -

I'd agree with that too. I only sold a couple of built to order PCs on which I didn't make much money and the buyers then expect free 24 hour lifetime support!
