Cheap free-range eggs?

It's only 99p for 10 large eggs at Aldi, which is pretty good. What's even better is that I noticed the eggs I bought on Wednesday at Aldi in Kirkcaldy were free-range, despite the box stating that they were eggs from caged hens. You can tell if they're free-range by having a quick look at the code printed on the eggs: if it starts with a 1, then it's free-range. There's even a handy "Egg Printing Explained" diagram printed on the underside of the box lid to help you out. I also checked the farm code on the sticker on top of the box to be sure, and it was indeed a free-range egg producer (Farmlay in Aberdeenshire).

This is brilliant value, as free-range eggs are normally a lot pricier than 10p per egg! I don't know if all of Aldi's eggs are like this (but, according to Wikipedia, Aldi - and Lidl - ONLY sell free-range eggs!), but if you like to buy free-range eggs and shop in Aldi, it's worth a quick check.

That is great news as I try to get my eggs from Aldi but always felt a bit guilty they were not free range. Free range are murderously expensive in Waitrose and the Co-op which are my nearest supermarkets.

Free range are regularly 99p for 6 in Iceland.
  • Try a post code search here:

If you get no joy finding a retailer you should be able to find the nearest producers who can tell you where they sell their eggs.

I pay £1.60 for half a dozen free range organic eggs.

One of my neighbours sells free range eggs from a little stand at the end of their drive - 60p for half dozen - leave your money in the tin!

I buy a couple of boxes every Saturday. Much better than Tesco etc!
  • Just checked my Aldi eggs. One pack I bought earlier in the week had code 1 so were free range. The pack I bought yesterday were code 3 so they were caged. I hadn't realised this before. Thanks for pointing it out.

  • Lidl's free range eggs are 99p. Actually good sized eggs and been buying them here for a while as Asda has got so expensive for them.
