HSBC or RBS?

Hey people, I've currently got an RBS account which they have told me will be converted to a student account very soon because I'm about to go to uni. My question is, should I stay with RBS or move to HSBC?

I've researched the perks of all the student accounts and have landed on HSBC and RBS as being the most suitable for me. Could someone with experience with both banks recommend which one they prefer on a customer service level? Which one has the best branches, online banking, etc

Thanks muchly :)

Where are you going to university?

In terms of online banking I use both and prefer RBS.

I have a basic current account with RBS, and I'll agree that their online banking facilities is still the best I've used. I'll have to say I'm really happy with RBS's customer service, based on 2 incidents:

    1. Once I accidentally went into overdraft due to direct debits and was charged £38. I felt that it was rather hefty (even more than the direct debit itself!) so I emailed them about it. A couple of days afterwards, I received a call from the branch manager who was very symptathetic and offered to withdraw the charge as a one-off goodwill gesture.

    2. As I do quite a lot of online transactions, there was this time where my debit card was fraudulently used to pay for a holiday(!), which I do not have enough money to pay for. RBS suspended the transaction, called me, and upon confirming it was a fraud, cancelled my debit card and sent me a new one within 5 working days (over the weekend).

However, I have no experience with HSBC though so I can't compare them both.

I have always had great c/service from NatWest, part of the RBS group, and I too love their on-line banking and credit card management services. I should imagine the same principles will also apply to RBS branches.

No bank is perfect (:rotfl:) and most people will have a horror story to tell about one or the other.

Could not agree more, have been with them for over 25 yrs. A great bank with knowledged staff in their branches and an excellent internet banking site. The site has more functionality than most internet banking sites, you can let them know if you're travleing abroad so they can keep an eye on your card transactions and also there is a future payments function which lets you see if there are any bacs, dd's etc awaiting to go in or out of your account in the next 24 hrs

    Are you in Scotland?
Remember that the non-Scottish branches of RBS are in the process of being sold off.

Yeah I'm in Scotland - going to Glasgow university.

I reckon I'll stick with RBS, there's only one HSBC in the whole of Glasgow but there's RBS branches everywhere. I really like RBS's iPhone app too :D

Oh, I didn't know that ! So, RBS will be represented in England and Wales by NatWest only ? I suppose it makes sense.
