Heating garage in bloc

My house has a garage about 20 yards away from the house in a bloc with 4 garages. It's one of the middle ones, but the far wall is external.
I will be doing quite a bit of work in it, so was wondering what my options for heating it on the cheap are... It's got light and power in it.
As the bloc has a peaked roof, I was going to put joists across to make a flat level "loft" for storage. I figured I could put roll insulation on that to help insulate it slightly but am still left with how to best heat it.
Is there any way I can fit a cheap log burner and simply exhaust it via the far external wall.. Would I need to get planning permission or other for something like this? (the garage is part of my freehold property but obviously it's part of a bloc).
Electric heaters would be the obvious choice but on peak rates, it could be quite costly.. Similarly propane heaters I think would end up costing loads whereas I can get firewood fairly cheaply.
Obviously if there isn't an alternative solution I will just go with simple electric heaters but figured I'd check here in case someone has a genius idea!
Cheers,
Pavel
