Best value boiler service/ gas safety check?

We are about to let our property out and I am just going through the 'checklist' of things to do. Next on my list is to arrange for our boiler to be serviced and a gas safety check (boiler and cooker). Any recommendations please?

What do you mean by recommendations?...

    Yes, you need it.
It needs to be a Gas Safe registered engineer.
I would not recommend British Gas.

Probably £100 to £150 for service + cert.

A local trader will probably be cheaper and often better than a "chain" operation. Check the local register:

get them both done at the same time you should be able to negotiate a discount.... you dont need a service every year on a newish boiler.... they are normally pretty sturdy beasts....

Excellent thanks. I just wondered if there were any national companies that did both for a good price. I'll ring round locally then.

I waited 3 years before having a service on my new boiler. When it was eventually serviced the chap said it was working fine. If I was letting I think it HAS to be annual though.

It doesnt need to be serviced annually but it must have an annual safety check ( Gas Certificate)

""If I was letting I think it HAS to be annual though""

a Landlords Gas Safety Certificate has to be provided annually... and the tenant has to be provided with a copy of it within 28 days of it being provided by the gas engineer, and the landlord must keep the certificate for a minimum of 2 years... A service is altogether different and is not compulsory.

Phone GasSafe and find a local gas engineer.prefereably one who has been in the business a few years....... they are all well qualified and it costs them a fortune to be a member and to keep regularly up to date with the regs... dont use BG they charge the earth anyway and will tell you an old boiler needs replacing just to get new sales....

I agree with boliston. Put in your postcode to get a list of your local trader it gives information of their services, most have email addresses. This is what I did a month ago and I sent equiries by email to 5 of them and asking for a price. I had mine done for £55 - service and certificate.

My sister has a house which she lets in an other area and gets the annual (it has to be annual if you let) service and she also paid £55 - she has been using the same local tradesman for a number of years.

I paid £70 last week. I asked for a service & the guy filled out a gas safety check for me too, I didn't ask for it.

I called up 5 plumbers from the gas safe website. 3 wanted £70, the other 2 wanted £100+.
