Hi
Travelling with children into central London from Stanmore on Sunday.
Is there a cheaper way to do this than the standard underground fare?
Currently we are looking at a day out, but will probably use the route more throught the year. Eldest child is 17 and still in fulltime education.

I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.

Are you doing just two journeys (i.e. in, and out again) or are you doing several journeys within central London whilst you are there?
Firstly, for yourself and any other adults:
Don't buy single paper tickets. For Zones 1-5 they cost £4.50 each way (i.e. £9 return) and don't benefit from an off peak reduction.
If you must buy a paper ticket then as you are travelling on a Sunday buy a one-day travelcard for £6.30. This gives you unlimited journeys within Central London as well as your journeys in and out.
If you use Oyster Pay As You Go, then the cost for the journey from Stanmore to Zone 1 falls to £2.40 each way, with additional journeys within Zone 1 at £1.80. No matter how much you use it however, the maximum charge is capped at £6.30 off-peak.
However, note you have to pay a £2 deposit for each Oystercard issued (not a problem if you intend doing this again a few times).
For the Children
Up to four under-10s can travel free with each Adult. No additional ticket is required.
11-15's need a photocard for reduced rate tube travel (Non-Resident photocard if outside Greater London) which can take two weeks to process. Cash singles at £2.20 each way do not need a photocard to buy. There is a one day Zone 1-6 one day travelcard at £2, but I don't know if the children need a photocard before you can buy it.
16's and over only get reduced rates if they are Greater London residents and have a photocard. Therefore your 17 year old would probably have to be treated as an Adult.0 -

They don't need a photocard to buy this ticket.0
