Mouse buttons.....

My mouse buttons on my usb mouse have decided not to work. Everything else is fine, moving the mouse and scrolling, just not right and left clicking.

Is this something I can fix or is it time to get a new one?

Not a silly question this;) Are they physically not working ('sticking') or clicks unrecognized within Windows.

They are clicking and just not being recognised by windows.

I have restarted the computer and then connected the mouse but with no affect.

If there is a specific, as opposed to generic, MS driver for the mouse then all I can suggest is to reinstall said driver. And if there is an applet that installs with the mouse then take a look at the settings therein. I use a bog standard usb mouse:rotfl:and so my settings are pretty much feature-less but the standard Windows mouse properties (within control panel settings, take a look and you will see) do apply.

It is a basic usb mouse just an optical one and not with the original style ball on the bottom. It's many years old maybe it's just ready to retire. :(

It just starts up automatically once you plug it in, always has done. I've no idea what I've done to upset it. :o

Can you recommend a cheap replacement. :)

Time to buy a new one I'd say. Microsoft or Logitech are normally good.

Tis a dead rodent indeed. Just been to try it on another laptop and it is deceased. :( .... but at over five years of age it's had a good innings.

I keep reaching out for it and it's not there.

Theres "buy it now's" on Ebay for around £6 delivered for something like a Microsoft basic optical mouse. If I was buying one now I'd probably go for a laser mouse as they track a bit more reliably than regular optical mice. Something like this maybe - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LOGITECH-RX1000-RX-1000-USB-WIRED-LAZER-LASER-MOUSE_W0QQitemZ200313009879QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_ComputerComponents_KeyboardsMice?hash=item2ea395f6d7

I got one of THESE, when I needed one in a hurry, got used to it and cba to change it.

I'd forgotten, but don't allow Windows Update install an updated driver, see the 9th June 2009 review.
I had the same, also with XP, Win7 seems to not bother.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Asda do some cheap ones also; although the wireless optical ones look dreadful; I took mine back as it refused to work.
