Windscreen wipers help!

Options
I'm going to play the girly card that I know very little about cars but I have a problem and would be so happy if someone could help.

My car an S reg Renault Clio, has got a little problem, the windscreen wipers will only work in what I call crazy mode, when then are constantly wiping super-fast.

They get stuck if they are on intermittent, I know obviously that something is wrong...a friend told me to try wd40, but if that doesn't work does anyone have a rough idea of how much it will be to fix, before I start ringing round for quotes.

I don't know if the whole wiper system will need replacing or is it just a motor that isn't working properly!

I would be grateful for any help, thanks so much!

Hard to say without a multimeter :D

My personal suspicion would be a problem with the switch or a small section of dodgy wiring. Might be worth looking in the yellow pages for an auto electrician?

Two things spring to mind: either the wiper relay or the park switch in the wiper motor. You could get another relay or wiper motor very easily from a scrapyard and fit it yourself for hardly any money.

Oddly enough I have the same problem, I've tried a couple of relays and it didn't fix the problem so next time I have a chance I'll pop along to the scrappy and try out a new motor.

i think it would be more likely to be the switch. the motor park switch would more likely stop the wipers returning to thier normal rest position,a relay can also cause this.

but if intermittent and normal speed don't work but full speed does then its likey to be the switch.

I play the 'boyie car' and get the wife to sort this kind of thing out.
  • Hi

Take the wipers off the windscreen, like when you want to dry the windscreen, and then switch the wipers on intermitant or normal. If it works, then your wipers motor in it's way. Then, I think you need to try WD40 on all of the commections between the motor and the arms. Eventually you will need a new motor.

If you lifted them off, and they still didn't work on those speeds, then goldspanner's suggestion is worth considering.

    Good luck
