Short-Long term storage for personal effects

Apologies if this is in the wrong sub-section, it seemed the closest for the scenario.
So I'm looking around for storage solutions. I may be a little homeless for a while and want somewhere to store my personal effects etc.
A Lock-up garage has been suggested as the cheapest option but I'm not overly keen for some of the electrical items and of course, those with value.
Various 'self storage' solutions are out there but mostly rather expensive. Figured I ask round here to see what others have found?
