Thanks, just trying to get my head around travelling in London.
I thought cos I was travelling to/from Watford I would need a zone 6 travelcard. I am under the impression that this means I will pay £7.50 for myself, £2 for my 13 year old son and the 7 year old would be free. As I am travelling of a weekend there is no off peak so we can use them anytime.
You can also get Family railcard discounts on the Travelcards too. I went for 4 days last year with my 7yr lad and the first couple of days I bought myself a 1-6 zone Travelcard for £7.50 and he went free. On the last couple of days however I found out I could use the Family Railcard to buy the tickets with so got mine for £5 and him one for just £1.
Also what most Scousers don't seem to realise when travelling around London is that, unlike how our Saveaways used to be for years, there is no 4-6pm peak time restrictions on the London Travelcards during the week. In London weekday peak time finishes at 9:30am until the following morning.
EDIT: just re-read the OP and realised you've since found out you can use Family railcards to buy Travelcard tickets. Oh well.......0 -
Can't thank you all enough for your tips and advice. I feel much more confident about going now.
Have my kipling bag with 8 credit card holders etc that I can use as a bumbag as my biggest fear is being robbed. I will keep all my train tickets, cards, camera, ipod and money in there.
I ordered the Frommers guide to London with kids and I can honestly say I learnt more from all your advice.Money SPENDING Expert0 -
off to London this weekend so thanks for all the tips. Have got fast-track tickets for London Eye via Airlmiles and Tesco. Thinking of doing that on the Sunday as hoping it will be a bit quieter than marathon day itself.
Not too sure how I will do things on the Saturday cos not too sure if will be able to get around on buses etc to see the sights.
We have decided our definites to do are- london eye
- river cruise
- westminster abbey
- hamleys (kids really want to go)
Did a car boot sale last week and made £180 so will almost have paid for trip.
Any more last minute advice would be appreciated. Thanks.Money SPENDING Expert0 -
On arrival at Euston, get to the underground part and onto the bakerloo line to Waterloo for The Eye (11 min journey time), by the time you have got tickets and walked to the eye, it would be about 12.30 at the earliest, queue to get tickets and wait to get on eye, (also visit the 4d London eye advertising experience beside the ticket office after-fun as it snows on you) so it prob 1.30pm before you get on the eye and then 30 min approx on it, so now 2pm. The round trip river cruise from Waterloo to Greewich will take 3 hours approx, so allowing for waiting time you probably won't get back to the Eye until about 5.15-5.30pm. Westminster Abbey will be shut by that time, so you may just need to head for Hamleys.0

Thanks, will go straight to London Eye.
The cruise I have got with my airmiles says it takes approx 40 minutes. Thinking of going to Westminster cathedral rather than Westminster Abbey as a lot cheaper and have read good reviews. Not sure if I will therefore be able to fit that in?????Money SPENDING Expert0 -

Don't know whether I have read this correctly, but the marathon is actually on Sunday, not Saturday.
Hope you have a good time anyway.0 -
Sorry to jump on your thread but I started a very silmilar one a few days ago. I am also planning a trip to London on my own with three kids but not till August. I too want to go on the London Eye - didn't realise you could buy tickets with tesco vouchers via airmiles. Could someone please explain to me how that works please? I would like to get Aquarium tickets too which I have seen on the Airmiles website. Not sure how to go about ordering them though. I have just converted the last lot of vouchers into Clubcard Deals ones worth £200. I a expecting another £30 worth of vouchers (£120 in deals) with the May mailing - will this be enough?
Many thanks for any help you can give x0 -

HI, we went to London first week of the school holidays. We ate using tesco deals in planet hollywood, bella italia and spaghetti house. We used deals for bus tour, tower of london and madam tussards. Everyone was okay about the vouchers.
We booked 2 rooms in a travelodge in southwark and it was really clean. We were near a train line but I was so tired by the time we went to bed it didnt bother me.0 -
