TalkTalk - cancelling direct debit?

I have had loads of problems with talktalk which will take up too much space to type out! Main points to do with my enquiry are as follows:

1. they agreed to refund me the first bill which I had already paid (as I did try to cancel in my cooling off period) - totalling £20.88
2. they accidentally refunded me 2 x £20.88 and didn't realise
3. they now have sent me a bill saying I have to pay a £70 disconnection fee (which I already have in writing by email that it has been written off)
4. I telephoned to tell them that I will not be paying the £70 and I have been assured that this charge has been removed - I don't, however, trust them not to take this money out of my account!!!

So my question is - if I cancel the direct debit to stop them taking out the £70 will they then try to charge me for cancelling a direct debit when I still owe them £20.88??? I have sent an email to tell them that I will be cancelling the direct debit and that they can invoice me anything I owe them but as yet have not heard back from them.

What would anyone else do?

I understand this may not make a lot of sense so please ask questions if necessary!

Post them a cheque for the £20.88 (with a comprehensive covering letter) and cancel the DD.

Keep copies of everything though, because it is almost inevitable that they're going to 'lose' your letter (despite the fact that they'll cash your cheque) and then they'll pass your alleged debt to debt collectors. You'll probably have to threaten them with a charge of harassment to finally get them off you back.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Ooh er, this dosent bode well. As a Tiscali customer who have now been taken over by talktalk I'm a tad worried!

Will have to keep an eye in things!

    Good luck Lucy!
