  • Sorry about the delay in doing the HijackThis - I will explain in due course.
Meanwhile I have downloaded the executable:
    1.3 MB filehippo.com
this has arrived with the following warning:
The Publisher could not be verified.
    Name: HijackThis.msi
    Publisher: Unknown Publisher
    Type: Windows Installer Package
    From: C:\DocumentsandSettings\Admin\Desktop

Should this give me any cause for concern?

Youve still got parts of mcafee running

    Use the MCAFEE REMOVAL TOOL
    http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

TICK and FIX these (whats still there) ~

    As discussed at:
    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=30174095&highlight=compromised#post30174095
I run McAfee "site advisor" and now know it is hopelessly out of date, BUT I do find it useful as a sort of guide to the origin of a site.
(That is a bit like using Zoopla as a post code checker.)
Something like Alexa is an alternative but I don't want to stop and check sites on a whim
(Site advisor gives Alexa an amber traffic light and that is right Alexa don't comply with "the individual is king" philosophy of the net and try to force themselves onto your personal computer.)

I thought I would start by upgrading to AVG9; hey ho for some reason AVG wants to use Internet Explorer not Firefox for its download. I've still got an up to date version of IE installed but screwed down on the security front. AVG does not like my IE settings.

How do I tell AVG to use firefox?
Come to think of it perhaps I should start by upgrading to a newer version of Firefox.

(I'm starting to feel like the boss of Toyota :rotfl:)

If you want to be safe whilst browsing the net then use FIREFOX with the NOSCRIPT plugin
I wouldnt recommend using mcafee with AVG installed as the 2 will more than likely clash to a degree
To upgrade AVG simply download direct using firefox to download the exe file. No need to use AVG itself

    Photogenic
Would Web of Trust Extension in Firefox not do a bettter job of warning about dodgy sites and site problems than "site advisor".

I've done step one and installed AVG 9.0.787.
However it does not work exactly the same way as release 8.5.

Ive noticed one specific seeming problem:

As I have explained above this DELL PC is about 4 years old and running Windows XP. It has been partitioned into six sections:
    Admin
    Mother
    Father
    Son
    Daughter
    Guest.

AVG is keen for me to tick boxes that ask it to only scan a subset of what is available - possibly to get away from complaints that it is clunky & bloated.
BUT I thought I would turn on everything available in the free adition and do an initial scan of the whole set up.
However AVG is still runable from any of the individual partitions (not sure about Son he seems to have locked his password and gone off to college)
    BUT
I get different informational messages depending on "who" initiates the scan.
Specifically I get messages saying "Locked" or "Macro" on different files.
It would appear that to fully scan the files of a particular user, the scan has to be initiated from that partition?
What I really want to be able to do, especially if there is a suggestion of a Virus,
is to do a scan of everything from Admin?

Anyway here is an overview of my results:
    37 mins run time
    4xx,xxx objects searched
390 informational messages of "Locked" or "Macro".
    Mary initiating user.

    31 mins run time
    412,385 objects searched
386 informational messages of "Locked" or "Macro".
    Dad initiating user.

    26 mins run time
    440,0164 objects searched
398 informational messages of "Locked" or "Macro".
    Daughter initiating user.

    28 mins run time
    403,964 objects searched
393 informational messages of "Locked" or "Macro".
    Guest initiating user.

    51 mins run time
    479,211 objects searched
116 informational messages of "Locked" or "Macro".
    Admin initiating user.

    ??????????????

I am also a little surprised that the AVG system does not seem to have found any tracking cookies?

The last 8.5.xxx scan of the whole system gave

    49 mins run time
    490,395 objects searched
    Mary initiating user.

    Intriguing

Personally im no fan of AVG anyways

Tracking cookies are nothing, maybe AVG no longer looks for them

    Id suggest as follows ~
    Please run COMBOFIX
    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
    Shut down your anti virus
Follow the simple instructions it gives
Post the COMPLETE log it creates here (Split into sections if need be)

If it comes up with a RENAMING error then RIGHT click the exe file and RENAME and call it QWERTY (Making the complete file name 'QWERTY.exe') Or SAVE as 'QWERTY' on download
