Protecting carpet from paint

Hello

Our hallway, stairs and landing need a coat of paint. The walls are easy just a coat of emulsion. The stairs are a bit trickier because they are carpeted and we don't want to take the carpet up. Has anyone any idea how we can protect the carpet? There won't be a huge change of paint colour (off-white to white)

Thanks

The usual approach is to cover them - if you have old curtains, old bed sheets etc then you can use those (make sure they aren't ridiculously thin). Alternatively you can buy dust sheets although personally Tesco's £1 shower curtains do a decent job.

If you are talking about painting the actual stair treads then probably yoour only option is to get some wide masking tape and use it to cover the edges of the carpet while you paint. There should be enough give at the edges to tuck the tape under.

You can buy like a clingfilm that covers carpet(plastic carpet protector product ) they use it on 60 min makeover lol!

Homebase sell it not sure how pricey though.

I always seem to hit the carpet when i use newspaper or sheets :(

Sheets are better than any dust sheet made out of plastic as the stairs could become like a ski slope.

cover as best you can (proper dust sheets are best) and dont paint right to the carpet edge/tufts.
masking tape is ok if you feel a bit nervous.

Thanks everyone - looks like dust sheets, masking tape and a steady hand is the way to go.
