It didnt sound that improbable if you account for Britain being the first industrialised country.

There's still a few well known Brits inventing, even if they do it for foreign companies (Jonathan Ive), for the benefit of all of us (Tim Berners-Lee), or developing a whole host of products through their companies (James Dyson). I think they are worthy of a mention as well as the companies.

Too many names to list - music, fashion designers, literature (nod to Shakespeare etc etc), TV game shows (sad but true), film etc etc.

Our creative industries are world beaters.
