Fridge freezer question

Just a quick one - as result of not noticing until too late!

Basically is a fridge freezer constantly on or does it turn itself off and on? I honestly cannot remember as I never paid attention to the fridge before!

I opened the door to the fridge yesterday and as the light came on I heard the buzzing noise of the fridge instantly stop. The fridge freezer was then completely silent for around 2 hours and some items in the freezer started to defrost. Later it just started buzzing again and the freezer started cooling down again. It is silent again this morning and things in the freezer are squashy again. We called the shop we bought it from as it is only 6 months old but they cannot come around until Tuesday.

If it is broken it certainly explains why whenever we defrosted meat it smells so awful!

I assume you mean the compressor noise.
Its basically a heat pump with thermostatic control that switches itself on an off as necessary to maintain the temperature you set. So yes it should be going on and off.
  • Have you not got a temperature gauge to check the temperature with ??
Even if the motor turns on and off as it should the things in the freezer should not be thawing out !!
  • If anything ever smells awful then it's generally off and needs the bin so I hope you haven't just been eating it regardless!!

All FF's go on and off to keep the temperature stable but if your food is partly thawing and freezing then you are at risk of food poisoning. You need to throw the contents out and claim it on your house insurance.

hi, what room do you have the FF in? Probably doesnt apply but worth bearing in mind that the ambient temp of the room will stop it working if it gets too cold. something like below 8 degrees depending on the climate class of the appliance.
