Increasing Web Traffic

Last year I published an Web site, so far it has received very little web traffic which is hardly surprising since Googling a few keywords doesn't display it anywhere on any page. Googling the specific slightly obscure name can just obtain it on the first page.
Obviously, I have registered with all the main search engines and placed keyterms in the header, although I understand Google doesn't use Metalabels anyway.
Has anyone any suggestions for increasing traffic?
It's a semi-technical non commercial site without advertising, so perhaps it's a bit specialist, however if I could include plenty of links even on relatively unrelated sites it would get it higher on the Google list?
I'm starting to write and link a few articles on Ezine, not sure if this will help.
I'm not sure if it would be invalid to link it with my signature here (since it is non advertising). I notice most forums have a system of redirecting links which attempt to do this sort of thing.
Note I keep editing the site a lot, so I'm not sure if this makes Google thinks its a new site
I'm working on this list at the moment

Editing the site, putting on fresh content is helpful, search engines prefer sites that are updated on a regular basis.
The easiest way to get higher search results is to pay a good SEO, but the good ones are not cheap.
To DIY it, join some good seo forums and start learning.
Links from other sites are helpful, more so if the sites are related, and the links are on topic.
If you create a really good website, others who use it will link to it, and your job will be easier.[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.

You'll get jumped on if you do but there is no reason not to add it to your profile here and any other forums you have registered on.
One place worth the effort of registering your site with is dmoz.org - a human edited directory which I think google bought a while back - they certainly use the site description from there in the search results.0 -
Have you attached a blog to the website?
I set up a site in July 2009, and it's deemed a micro niche, I also attached a blog to it, where you have some of the information and then link into the main site.
Wordpress has a SEO package as an add-on which is useful.
I get roughly 300 unique visitors each month, and most of the referrals are via the search engines.
You're right to go through ezine but be aware they can be problematic at times... try other sites such as goarticles, amazines, articlesnatch and this will get the information out there and as cit_k said, others will use your articles and when they do, they should and normally do link to your site.
There are traffic generation sites, but they produce the quantity not the quality hits. It's pointless having 3000 people clicking a link to view your website for 10 seconds, you want the ones that click your link because they want to.
Also try looking up warrior forum, they have some good information to get people up and running.
Best of luckIn spite of the cost of living, it’s still popular :eek:0 -

Sort of but I don't call it a blog, its simply part of the site in which articles are added, does this have to be an official ready made blog sites?
I have opened two ready made blog sites at http://sites.google.com/site/ and windows live which I think is the old hotmail/MSN but not placed a lot on there yet.0 -
The other thing I was thinking of was paying Google for a sponsored link. anyone tried this?0

Start Facebook, Bebo and twitter accounts for the site. Google seems to search in there for regular updates. try putting your own name into google and see if it comes up anywhere.0

Adwords is a fast way to get traffic, its also a fast way to give money to google...[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.

No, but put the key search phrases into the text of the pages themselves.

There's simple stuff like putting the web address in your email signature. Join relative forums on your subject and do the same.
Sign up people via the website and use their emails to send out regular "ebulletins" about what's new on website.
It's a semi-technical non commercial site without advertising, so perhaps it's a bit specialist, however if I could include plenty of links even on relatively unrelated sites it would get it higher on the Google list?
As far as I'm aware it doesn't how many links you have on your site,
it's the quantity and the quality of the websites who link to you..
I'm starting to write and link a few articles on Ezine, not sure if this will help.
If they're good articles they will. Tease them to learn more by going to the website
I'm not sure if it would be invalid to link it with my signature here (since it is non advertising). I notice most forums have a system of redirecting links which attempt to do this sort of thing.

This should actually help your ratings as Google likes regularly updated pages

I am no SEO expert so not going to go down that route but I am going to pick up on the Social Media angle mentioned by an earlier poster.
Are you useing some kind of CMS Software? I would get your site set up with a profile on both Twitter & Facebook, if you are using CMS Software there will probably be a plugin which will automatically post any updates to your site onto the services. If cannot use a plugin do this manually.
You then need to start to connect with people within the Niche that you are working in, who are the "celebs" of that world, who has influence etc and also with the normal site visitors. If you can get the to retweet or recommend your site it will not only be seen by more people but will be endorsed by a 3rd party to some extent.
I might not be explaining this well as I have a long day but do you get what I am talking about?
What Niche are you working in? Drop me with a PM with the URL and I will take a look see.The only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them into the impossible.
