The fact that you are posting on here means you aren't happy with the deal.
Walk away.0 -
No don't do it, golden rule: If in doubt pull out. Applies to a lot of things in life.
It may well be genuine but you'll probably only find out the hard way if its not.0 -

Seem to recall my Dad telling me something like that when I was a lad.:)0 -
HPI the car and ask for proof of ID from the seller, and take a copy of ID,also get a full receipt stating that he is legally entitled to sellI

I would be 99% certain the guys a motor trader shirking his responsibilities to his customers by pretending to be a private seller.
If he has to do that, then he hasnt an awful lot of confidence in the car hes selling does he?0 -
wouldnt touch its with somebody else ......
its may be a perfectly legitimate sell but on the other hand it may not be and could give you a hell of a lot of trouble in a few months time the words family friend just rings alarm bells
it could be stolen it could be a partner selling a girlfriends /boysfriends car out of spite could have hp on it and probably worse have a log book loan on it which wont show up on a hpi check could be written of of cat d or is it cat c ( cant remember) but unless its a real real real bargain one that cant be missed in any way and you can afford the headache that you might get afterwards then i would look for another car
if you do go ahead make sure that you go to the house,( dont meet at a garage or a supermarket car park
ask to see id of the person who is selling the car , use your phone to take a photo if you can of the id and ask for a utillity bill as well to prove that they are the same person living at that addressLooking to buy a used car. Everything seems in order. Seller claims to have all previous MOT documents, spare keys etc. Only thing is, seller is not registered owner or keeper of vehicle. Claims he is selling on family friend's behalf, who live in the midlands. We're South of England.
Is this standard practise?0 -
Lots of interesting replies. This could be genuine, no-one knows the circumstances of the family friend. Yes, you should proceed with caution, and make sure everything checks out, including contacting said 'family friend', HPI etc. I'm in the process of selling my parents car for them, they don't want the hassle of viewings, people phoning them up, etc etc. The car is with me, along with all the documents, but they are 150 miles away. It's not at all dodgy, they just don't need the car any more. I'm not a dealer, but presumably, many of you would walk away because I'm not the registered keeper?
If you really want the car, check it out thoroughly and if you are in the slightest bit concerned with the replies you get, then walk away, there will be other cars out there. But you don't automatically have to assume the worst!0 -
Avoid as it has been said many more cars around so be picky0
