Ideas for a cheap (but nice) kitchen....

Hi Guys,

I need some ideas to redecorate my kitchen - my house is owned by a HA and I enquired when they would be replacing my kitchen, and they said a good 15+ years yet. Anyway, the kitchen is tired looking and needs a boost - I have started buying the "bright" accessories from the Next Kitchen range, and was planning on white high gloss cupboard doors, white gloss worktops and white walls, couldnt decide on the flooring, but thinking that may be a bit too bright....all ideas greatly appreciated :)
Thanks!!!

Won't white walls get a bit grubby in the kitchen? I know they would in mine but then I can be a bit slack with the cleaning. I like the idea of all white with the bright range, maybe some bright curtains too or a few bright tiles but I think it would look nicer with a wooden worktop. You can get some ideas from paint colour books sites and there are websites where you can upload a pic of your room and play around with different wall/floor colours-i think dulux and crown do it-it's quite fun.
  • hi fedupofdebt,

i recently renovated my kitchen using gloss white doors and a oak woodblock worktop, new oven, hob and sinks / taps. we bought all the doors from jewsons and b and q (when their half price sale (plus an extra 15%) was on), and ebay. the place looks just like the kithcen on the cooke and lewis advert which is awesome, and we got it for an absolute song. all the carcasses were knackered apart from the draw unit and sink unit so i remade them using wood from b and q (the white contiboard stuff). this is much easier than it sounds.

the b and q doors were too big for our upper cupboards so i had them cut down to 570mm at work on the saw. redrilled the hinge holes and fitted them. i think all in ive spent about £1200 replacing everything (sinks, taps, hobs, fridge freezer, oven, extractor, lights, doors, carcasses, handles, hinges etc. but it would have cost £5 - 6k upwards easily if i had used the b and q design service. im really pleased ith it and was planning to do a new moneysaving thread explaining it all once its fully finished as its by far the most moneysaving thing ive ever done, and im pretty damn proud of it too! lol.

dont be afraid to have a go yourself. if you measure the doors, you will probably find they came from a diy shop or big suppliers. they are all a standard ish size so should be okay to replace. also, ikea is cheapest by far and is good quality, but its a two hour drive for me here in norwich so it was out of the question!

    good luck!

Yeah you are probably right, white walls will maybe get a bit grubby, but I've got the paint now, so it's going up! I was going for the "fresh" look. You might be right with the wooden worktop, that sounds quite nice, I just really don't know what to put on the floor, it has wood effect lino at the moment, and I don't like it at all. (but then it's old and tatty looking now) The idea with uploading the room sounds fun, I might have to have a go at that :) Thanks,

    Hi Adrian,
Well your kitchen sounds lovely and I think your right to be proud of it! Well, I don't want to spend a fortune on it, and I like your idea. I have seen some white gloss doors in b&q but they are £35 each and I think that's a bit pricey? I need 8 of them, the carcasses of my cupboards aren't too bad, but the wrong colour, so was going to paint them, I got the fuschia pink splashback today from b&q, so gotta take the tiles down which are currently there, might look at replacing them, as somebody said you need tiles in a kitchen...
I didn't even think of Ebay, but that's a brilliant idea, I'll have a look on there, because I could do with a sink (mine has gloss all over it) and also a new cooker.
Will definately have to go for the wooden worktop now, the more I think about it, the more I like it.
Haha, I have no idea where the closest Ikea is...I know the distribution centre is here, but there's no shop!! Useless hey:)

  • Don't pay B&Q prices or other big outlets... try find out what the name of the product you want then do a search on google or eBay.

B&Q and other big firms are crafty by labeling the products their own name... so, pick the main words out and enter them in a search...

In terms of a new lick of paint.... what about a really light pastal yellow colour... think of a really light mustard colour ..then the top white...
  • I have white walls in my kitchen, and I like it! It does show marks, but most things wipe off with a sponge and a bit of stardrops, and a quick lick of paint once a year or so soon spuces it up! Also, no cutting in between walls and ceiling! I have white cupboards, darkish grey worktops and a wooden parquet floor.
